A community solar project is a solar power array whose electricity is shared by more than one property. The primary purpose of community solar is to allow members of a community the opportunity to share the benefits of solar power even if they cannot or prefer not to install solar panels on their property. Project participants benefit from the electricity generated by the community solar farm, which costs less than the price they would ordinarily pay to their utility.
Cost – Participating in a community solar project eliminates the need to purchase and install a rooftop system, and provides lowered shared costs.
Access – Community solar allows business that otherwise might not be able to tap into the benefits of solar power. Businesses that rent their space or building structures not ideal for solar panels can benefit from shared solar power.
Environmental – Solar energy is a100% renewable energy source. Each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of solar that is generated will substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions like CO2, as well as other dangerous pollutants such as sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Solar also helps reduce water consumption and withdrawal.
